Trolley Coaster: A Dynamic Installation at Taiwan Design Expo

Transforming the Design Expo into a Vibrant Super South Supermarket

Trolley Coaster, designed by Chih-Kang Chu, is a unique installation that combines the excitement of a roller coaster with the nostalgia of shopping in a supermarket. With tracks that wind through the exhibition area, visitors can witness trolleys coasting down the tracks, accompanied by the familiar sounds of a supermarket. This installation not only adds vibrancy to the design expo but also creates a connection with the public, evoking fond memories and a sense of joy.

The Trolley Coaster installation stands out for its collaborative effort between the government and the public. The tracks were designed and produced by glove puppetry stage cart technicians, showcasing their expertise in creating dynamic structures. To minimize costs and resource waste, the Pingtung County Government and Taiwan Design Center collaborated with a private corporation, Carrefour, to borrow trolleys for the installation. After the exhibit, all trolleys will be safely returned to Carrefour to continue serving the public, ensuring a sustainable approach to the project.

One of the key considerations in the realization of Trolley Coaster was the use of recyclable materials. With the exhibit lasting only two weeks, the design team carefully planned for the post-exhibit phase from the early stages. The trolleys, scaffolds, motors, tracks, wheels, and canvas were all given a new purpose. The borrowed trolleys will be returned to Carrefour, while the motors, wheels, and tracks will be reused for puppetry stage carts. This approach not only reduced waste but also demonstrated the importance of sustainability in large-scale installations.

The Trolley Coaster installation spans the entire exhibition area, connecting all the themed exhibitions. With two tracks passing across the venue, the trolleys create a dynamic and visually captivating experience. The design team utilized the vast space of the 6600 m2 venue to its fullest, ensuring that even with multiple themed exhibitions, the area felt cohesive and engaging.

Trolley Coaster was not only a visual spectacle but also a result of extensive research. The design team aimed to enhance the concept of the exhibition and increase its topicality and publicity. By evoking the memory of shopping in a supermarket, the installation resonated with the local enthusiasm of Pingtung, bringing the design expo closer to the public. The familiar visuals and sounds created a sense of connection and nostalgia, making the exhibition more relatable and memorable.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, the Trolley Coaster installation successfully captured the attention of visitors. Acting as a focal point at the entrance, it became an important visual element for people to check in. As visitors explored the exhibition, the elevated tracks subtly divided and guided them through the different areas, creating a seamless and immersive experience.

Trolley Coaster, with its innovative design and engaging concept, received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Performing Arts, Stage, Style, and Scenery Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life. Trolley Coaster exemplifies these qualities, making it a standout installation at the Taiwan Design Expo.
